Sunday Wadena Fastball Tournament

On June 16, one of the most exciting softball events in Wadena history happened with the New Zealand International Softball Academy’s 19-and-under Team coming to town. The event was planned a year prior with discussion centred around a Saskatchewan tour of midget ball players from New Zealand. With the strong connection of Wadena to boys softball the decision was made to include Wadena in the cross Canada tour. The New Zealand players were hosted by local billet off the Rosebud Royals and Wadena Wildcat Bantam team.

Game one started with New Zealand jumping out to a quick 5-0 lead over the hometown Rosebud Royals. The Royals would continue to chip away at the lead making it 5-2 in the third inning; however, New Zealand would again pull away after that making the final 12-2 for the team from New Zealand. Leading the way for New Zealand would be shortstop Josh Jacobs with two homeruns and four RBIs. The winning pitcher for the game would be Scott Hartley. The final line score would be:
Rosebud: 2 runs, 2 hits, 2 errors, 7 LOB
NZ: 12 runs, 10 hits, 4 errors, 9 LOB

Game two would see the hometown Rosebud Royals exact revenge on the young in New Zealand team. Rosebud would hold a 4-3 lead after four innings and continue to hold the lead until the next winning when New Zealand pulled ahead 5-4. The Royals would then score 4 runs in the sixth inning to jump out to an 8-5 lead on route to a 9-8 Final for the hometown Royals. Rosebud sent experience and youth to the Mound with Masters aged James Anderson getting the win pitching 5 and 2/3rd inning and Midget aged Nathen Pomedli coming in for the save. The final line score would be:
Rosebud: 9 runs, 12 hits, 1 error, 6 LOB
NZ: 8 runs, 11 hits, 2 errors, 4 LOB

The event was also used to promote boys softball across our province and with that the introduction of local boys that will be heading to New Zealand and Australia in February 2019. The local Saskatchewan Junior Canadian Royals will be heading to Auckland, New Zealand and Sydney, Australia to participate in games against boys teams from those countries. The local boys are 4-time provincial champions and are looking forward to the next step, that being ball at the international level.

Foam Lake Merchants got ahead 10-6 going into the bottom of 7. The neutral site crowd in Sheho was treated to some excitement when home town boy Chad Sebulsky hit a 3 run Homerun to bring the Rockets within 1 but that was all the Rockets could muster in their last attempt. Merchants won 10-9.

Rosebud Royals kept a few runs ahead of Da Boyz during the game, then broke it open in the 6th batting around the order. Royals Pitcher Dylon Murias had his first complete game win holding the Gordon’s Squad off through the 7 inning game.

After the game the Royals stuck around to finish off their home dugout they were installing in time for the New Zealand International Softball Academy double header on Saturday. The Royals upgraded their Home Dugout and one more dugout on a second diamond. The Royals project used materials supplied by Wadena Coop with some of those materials donated by the Wadena Coop and some backhoe work donated by Doug Ward and Four Ward Holdings. The Dugout is one of a few of the upgrades happening at the McClymont Lions Sports Grounds, thanks to the Town of Wadena and companies like Wadena Co-op, Four Ward Holdings, and Diamond Sponsor RE/MAX Blue Chip Realty. The addition of the Richardson Pioneer Men’s Fastball league and a huge jump in Minor Ball Numbers have given some new life to Ball in Wadena and the sports grounds.
